Fans of the 2005 romantic comedy Hitch may have something to look forward to—but not without controversy.
Reports have emerged that Will Smith is secretly developing a sequel to the beloved film, and shockingly, original director Andy Tennant is not involved. Tennant himself revealed that he only found out about the project three months ago, despite previously pitching a sequel concept to Sony.
Why is Smith Moving Forward Without Tennant?
Andy Tennant recently opened up about the challenging experience he had working with Will Smith while directing Hitch. In a new interview, Tennant admitted that making the film was “a battle” and that he and Smith often clashed over creative decisions. In fact, the director claims Smith tried to exit the project just three days before filming began, insisting that the script needed more work.
“We had our difficulties,” Tennant told Business Insider. “The movie I wanted to make and the movie Will wanted to make—neither one of those movies would’ve been as good as the one we made together. It was a battle.”
Tennant also recalled specific moments where he and Smith struggled to agree, including the tone of the comedy and certain key scenes. Smith reportedly needed convincing to film the now-iconic doorstep scene with Kevin James, as well as the emotional Ellis Island sequence. However, one moment they fully agreed on was the hilarious dance lesson scene that remains a fan favorite.
Despite the creative struggles, Hitch became a massive hit, earning over $370 million worldwide and solidifying itself as one of the best romantic comedies of the 2000s. Yet, when filming wrapped, Tennant claims Smith abruptly walked off set and never spoke to him again.
“When it was over, my time with Will was over,” Tennant recalled. “I have never heard from him since.”
A Sequel in the Works—Without Tennant
Given their past difficulties, Tennant was surprised to learn that Smith is now developing a sequel—without him.
“I submitted a proposal for a sequel, which was quite fun, but I guess Will is developing a Hitch sequel without me. I just found out about it three months ago,” Tennant revealed.
Apparently, when he pitched his idea for a sequel to Sony, he was informed that Smith’s production company had already taken the reins on the project.
“Hey, that’s Hollywood,” Tennant said, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the film industry.
While details about the plot of the sequel remain under wraps, Smith’s involvement suggests that the film may follow up on the story of Alex “Hitch” Hitchens, the professional dating coach who helped clueless men woo the women of their dreams.
Will Eva Mendes and Kevin James Return?
Another major question surrounding the Hitch sequel is whether stars Kevin James and Eva Mendes will return. Mendes played Sara Melas, the intelligent and independent journalist, while James portrayed Albert Brennaman, the lovable accountant.
Neither Mendes nor James have commented on the sequel so far. Mendes has been largely absent from Hollywood in recent years, focusing on her family life with husband Ryan Gosling. James continues to work in both film and television, making a return plausible if the script calls for it.
Why Now?
With Hitch celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the timing for a sequel makes sense. The film remains a favorite among rom-com lovers and continues to gain new fans through streaming platforms. The demand for nostalgic sequels and reboots has never been higher.
However, Smith’s recent controversies—including his infamous 2022 Oscars slap incident—have complicated his Hollywood comeback. Developing a sequel to Hitch could be a strategic move to remind fans of his charm and comedic talent.
What’s Next for Hitch 2?
Although there is no official release date, Hitch 2 appears to be moving forward, even without its original director. Fans will be eager to see if Smith steps back into the role of the smooth-talking dating coach and how the film adapts to modern love and relationships.
But the big question remains: Can Hitch 2 recapture the magic of the original without Andy Tennant? Or will the behind-the-scenes drama impact the sequel’s success?
For now, fans of the classic rom-com will have to wait and see if this long-awaited sequel can live up to expectations.
